Earlier today I spoke with
a friend of mine who runs a food pantry in another state. (I won't set him out
by naming who he is or what state he is from.) He said that last week they were
not able to get to where they pick up food to distribute because of the extreme
weather they were having, so the pantry was not open for food distribution as
they normally are. He said that they did open their doors and allowed people to
get what they had on hand, but it was very limited and was quickly gone.
Here's
what blew my mind. People cursed him, threatened him, threatened to call the
police, threatened to call officials in their state capitol and have them
shut down, called him a racist and there were some people who went so far as to
threaten to burn his building down! I'm like, wait... the very people you help
to provide food and clothing to week after week, month after month are
threatening you like this because you are unable to help them one week? I was
just floored! He has done this ministry, free of charge for YEARS and because
this one time they were not able to help, the people turned on him and his
ministry this way? This is such a sad
snapshot of what an entitlement mentality we live in is like. The very people you
help today will turn on you and try to destroy you as soon as you are not
meeting their desires. How sad. It shows just how little they appreciate what
is being done for them. They simply EXPECT and demand that it be done for them!
I’m sure there were some who do, in fact, appreciate the efforts of this great
ministry, but it has to be heartbreaking to have folks treat them that way
after all the years of ministry, service and tens of thousands of dollars
invested in that community.
I’m praying for you and all your staff, my
brother!
