Without a doubt, one of my most favorite things to experience in the Bahamas was the Junkanoo Festival. We actually only experienced a taste of this, as the main Junkanoo Festival is held the week of Christmas every year. However in Freeport, they hold a summer Junakanoo, which is a mini-version of the full-blown festival held each winter. (Is it even right to call what they experience winter? I don't think so.)
Anyway, at this festival, there were a variety of food booths were one can try the foods of the islands, and they have a wide range of entertainment provided. But the highlight was the Junkanoo parade. It is difficult to explain, you need to experience it for yourself. Suffice it to say, it was incredible.
If you are interested, you can do a Google search of Junkanoo and get some information and even a small taste of the music.
The food was also incredible.
Daniel got a fried lobster tail dinner plate for a whopping $12.00!
When he discovered how inexpensively he could eat lobster, I thought he'd go crazy, but actually he decided he wanted to try other things as well.
Watching these men and women dance and play in this parade was just amazing. They worked so hard and were just dripping with sweat, but they continued without missing a beat. And they tell me that in the Winter Junkanoo they dance for 14 hours! (Now there's idea of how to drop a few pounds!)
If you ever find yourself down on the islands, make it a point to check out the Junkanoo. It is well worth it.

Looks like so much fun , i hope to go one day !!!
junkanoo looks like it could be fun--i don't know about that headgear tho. hope it was lightweight!!!
They told me that they make all their costumes themselves out of paper, but I would think even that would get heavy after so much of it.
I wonder what our "spiritual garments" look like? Just wondering if they are as colorful. HEY! If they can dance for that long? Then we should be able to worship, praise and pray for at least that long or more!
Glad you guys are back and hope you are rested! Looks like you had a wonderful time. God Bless...
